South Dakota State Requirement Details for New Broker Associates Real Estate Post-Licensing

South Dakota School Code/Approval Number: Course approval numbers are listed next to each course.

For the first two (2) licensing periods after initial licensure, new Broker Associates initially licensed on or after July 1, 2009 need to complete a total of 60 hours, 30 hours in each of the first two licensing periods, of post-licensing education.

  • Renewal deadline November 30th. If it is your year to renew, renewal forms MUST be in the SD REC office by Nov 30th of that year. 
  • For the first initial licensing period, new broker associates need to complete 30 hours, including a minimum of 6 hours in each of the following areas:
    • Agency
      • The 11 hour Seller Representative Specialist (SRS) course above meets 2 hours of this area.
    • Contracts
    • Fiduciary Duties/Trust Accounting/Earnest Money
      • The Title and Escrow: Two Families, One Transaction course above meets 3 hours of this area and,
      • The 11 hour Seller Representative Specialist (SRS) course above meets 6 hours of this area and,
      • The Uncle Sam has Homes for Sale: Listing and Selling HUD Homes course above meets 3 hours of this area.
    • Business Planning/Etiquette
      • The Roadmap to Success: Business Planning for Real Estate Professionals course above meets 3 hours of this area.
    • Ethics/Professional Liability
      • The Cracking the Code of Ethics course above meets 3 hours of this area and,
      • The Diversity: Your Kaleidoscope of Clients course above meets 3 hours of this area and,
      • The Foreclosures Demystified course above meets 3 hours of this area.
  • For the 2nd licensing period, new broker associates need to complete 30 additional hours, including a minimum of 6 hours in each of the following areas:
    • Negotiation
    • Real Estate License Law
    • Technology
    • Marketing/Advertising
      • The 11 hour Seller Representative Specialist (SRS) course above meets 3 hours of this area.
    • Property Issues
      • The Going Green: The Environmental Movement in Real Estate course above meets 3 hours of this area.
  • Education hours that are used to activate a license may not be used again to renew a license.
  • South Dakota Real Estate Commission Administrative Rule 20:69:00:07:01 – Criteria for distance education or independent study course approval. (8) The course provider must require that the student pass an appropriate exam to successfully complete and receive credit. An examination will be considered appropriate if it contains at least five multiple-choice questions for each hour of credit and requires a minimum passing score of 80 percent.

Immediately upon real estate course completion, The CE Shop will provide students with an electronic copy of the course Certificate of Completion. Certificates will remain in your account for a minimum of five (5) years, should you need additional copies at a later time. Licensees are encouraged to retain copies of their Certificates of Completion in the event that they are audited by the state. Please refer to your renewal application to determine if you need to submit your Certificate(s) of Completion with your renewal.

Real estate course completions are recorded with the South Dakota Real Estate Commission each business day. Generally it may take 2-4 business days from the time we report your hours before the Commission updates your license and/or updates their website with the hours. The SD REC has advised us that course may take 2-3 weeks after we report to the state to be posted to licensees' education reports by the SD REC. Licensees who wait until the last minute of their renewal year to complete their education may not receive their new license in time to remain on active status.
